Here is the $100 Relay Video!
PhilaU is one of 4 schools in the region to remain on track for the Pace Setter award! To move on to the next level, we need 40% of participants, about 140, to have raised their $100 by next Friday!
If you have any fundraised dollars, please submit them. If you have cash, bring it to the meeting on Wednesday and I will have cash envelopes that you can fill out and hand it. The money will be translated to your online fundraising status.
Remember! Relay is in 2 weeks from today! 14 days!!!! So exciting!!!!
Keep up the fantastic work PhilaU Relayers!
We're kicking cancer's butt this year!

FOUR DAYS UNTIL RELAY?!?!

Britt and I (as well as the rest of the committee) are starting to get really really excited about Relay! We can hardly believe it will be THIS Friday!

Although it is so close, we did not need to have a committee meeting this evening. It felt very strange, but we pretty much have everything covered as long as we have enough help at the event.

We are still working hard to get food donations. We have a good number of pizzas, which is awesome, but we are trying to get a sufficient amount of breakfast donations and other snacks. We have some, but we are still counting on a few more.

We had a walk-through with managers of the gym facilities, physical plant, and safety & security. Things went really well and we seem to be all set to go! We will begin decorating on Thursday and then get everything else set up Friday afternoon.

There was a team captain meeting and discussed team spirit. We encourage all teams to come up with a team theme (a favorite movie, movie genre, or movie era) and then wear costumes which go along with that theme. It should be tons of fun to see what everyone comes up with! We also hope all the teams can make a team banner to display at their campsite and a spirit stick for the team member who is walking the track at the time to hold. Materials for making these can be found in Kanbar 311. We will be having contests for best team theme, costumes, banner, etc. :D

Well, although I have tons more to say, just because it's Relay week doesn't mean I don't have a huge History of Architecture case study due Friday, so I had really better get to work on that.

I will see you all at Relay!!!!

I can count the days to Relay on my fingers

Wow, TEN DAYS! I know I can't believe it!! We are up past $13,700!
Our committee meeting Sunday night was great. Everyone seems to be on target and stepping up their game in this crucial time. Our largest challenge remains persuading stores to donate food to our event. Wish us luck!

Things are going very well as far as planning goes. We have a lighting test scheduled for tonight, and we are meeting with PhilaU staff to walk through the Gallagher center and discuss all of the facilities on Friday. One of our challenges in starting a new event is getting everyone on the same page and understanding the goals and ideas of the event. Next year should be much easier!
That aside, I am very excited about the musicians and activities we have planned for throughout the night, and we hope you are too!
You should definitely checkout their music online!

We hope you guys can make it out to the last team captain meeting of the year, open to team captains and team members. We will provide supplies for groups to make team banners and spirit sticks. The meeting will be held this Thursday, March 26th at 5pm in Kanbar 300 (This year the event theme is Hollywood Movies. Teams are encouraged to select a team theme (often a a movie, genre or era). At Relay, there will be a contest for best campsite decoration, costume, and team banner! I hope to see some creative themes!

That's about it for now!

What a week!

Hello, all!

It's been a BUSY week for both Britt and me. We had final critiques for our Design class so we had several nights in row where we only got 1-2 hours of sleep....however, it's over and tomorrow is SPRING BREAK! We both look forward to going home, writing papers, and getting lots of things worked out for Relay...which is (scary-but exciting!) only 21 days away?!?! Where has all the time gone?

In other news. ..

We are ridiculously excited that we have almost $11,000!!!!!!!!!!
Don't forget to ask all your family and friends from home for donations over spring break :)

We had our second "Purple Thursday" in March. If a committee member sees you wearing purple on any Thursday in March, you get a Relay Buck which can be spend on different goodies at the Relay event April 3. You can also go to Kanbar 311 sporting your purple and they'd be happy to give you a Relay Buck.

Another aspect of purple Thursdays is the tabling we have in Kanbar during the activities period. Today Genevieve, Britt, and Miles took turns manning the table and selling Luminaria and shirts. The shirts are AWESOME and designed by PhilaU's very own graphic design student, Lindsay Beach. You can stop by our table on any Thursday from 11am-1pm in Kanbar or go to Kanbar 311 at any time to purchase one for $12. THEN you can put it on and get a Relay Buck ;)

We also held a faculty dress down day today. Tickets were $5 and we heard many reports of faculty and staff sporting their jeans and purple ribbons! :) Thanks to all who bought a ticket!

Well, that's all for now. Still recovering from my busy week, plus I need to pack for spring break.
Just wanted to give you a quick update of all things Relay this week.

Keep fundraising and tell all your friends to register!!
It's easy and it's going to be so much fun!

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

We are glad to see you have found us again!
If you are new to Relay For Life, feel free to check out the last entry to get a better feel for the event!

This week was an excellent and productive Relay week.

We started off on a positive note, with a very well attended committee meeting on Sunday night. The committee is a group of students who volunteer to organize different aspects of the Relay event. The committee meets every other week and includes various sub-committees like: Team Recruitment, Luminaira, Activities and Entertainment, Public Relations, and Surviorship. Relay would be impossible without a strong committee. We are very lucky to have assembled a small, but dedicated group of nine. Of these fabulous nine, all are, or once were, design students. Six are majoring in architecture, which disproves the rumor that architecture students have no time for non major activities-for any prospective students out there!

As the count down continues, Relay responsibilities become more and more real. Since this is our first Relay, we had a lot of experimentation and things to learn--we didn't know what would work and we had to get the word out on campus to ensure we had enough support to even HAVE a Relay! Since we now have our feet on the ground, we do not think we will need to recruit for committee positions until much later in the school year. Hopefully that will bring even more people to this already great committee. Sometimes no amount of candy or cake can lure a person to a meeting. :(

But we are hoping food, friends, fun and a little curiosity, joined with the moving "celebrate, remember, fightback" theme can lure them to a Relay? Fingers crossed for a good turnout on April 3rd!!

One of the big tasks the committee is working on right now is food donations.
We have broken up the restaurants, grocery stores, and coffee shops in the area and have written a letter, asking them for food donations. Visiting local stores can become overwhelming and challenging to schedule, but our committee seems to be doing well!

I must now leave the Relay productivity for a less rewarding, but equally necessary activity: sleep.

I'll close with the highlights and challenges of our week:

Challenges:
*Great ideas, but slow follow through. We are working through approval issues for a campus-wide fundraiser we are trying to organize. (Update: We have just received approval for a Relay For Life Faculty and Staff Dress Down Day, keep an eye out of an email detailing this fundraiser! Very exciting!)
* Balancing Relay with mid-terms week.

Highlights:
*We are tickled to see the donations grow EVERY day--we have hit the $9,500 mark...and always increasing!!
*Personally, I was shocked and proud to see a group of girls selling food in the Architecture and Design building around 12am as a Relay For Life fundraiser! I enjoyed a delicious bag of Cheetos--thanks, ladies!

Catch you next week!
Britt
